...naivety is at once one of my obvious and spontaneous weaknesses and simultaneously strengths...we're bantering away, M...whom i hadn't known very well then, and as we traversed the darkness interrupted by interspersed street lights, on our glum way at about 7-10 pm from Cricklewood to Willesden Green, shortly after or around the time of the first Gulf War...i'd finished the usual work shift, and M... rarely for him was at a temporary loose end 'cause of the apparent economic downturn, had joined me on my melancholic way home...walking on just up ahead of us, at first glance unsuspecting, and vigorously engrossed in their conversation and (h!)assiduously minding their business, across the street, tall and ramrod straight, cylindrical hats aurhoritatively affixed to the top surfaces of their heads, clothed in long dark and distinctive outer garb, were a group of at least five or six (i soon realized..!) ostensibly solemnly disposed Orthodox Jews...M.. had drawn my attention to them, depicting them i must add in rather distinctly crude and unflattering terms that surprised me, walking on, i'm suddenly aware of they're being 'thrown' into an irate state of furiously animated confusion, then adopting serious postures after stomping their feet they looked back and around and must had noted us a mere 'stone's throw' at their oblique rear when they sounded as if they argued volatilely among themselves and then instantly collecting themselves they marched hurriedly onwards, and after another couple of minutes or so, they repeated the entire drama, only now it was more animated and their demeanours, now more observable as we'd closed the distance might be perceived as expressive mixtures of violent disbeliefs and potentially threatening, and while it now felt obvious to even me that something must had mysteriously rattled them, and their inexplicable behaviours had thoroughly grasped my curiosity, i boldly inquired of M... in succinct terms of "what the fk is their problem?"...M...shrugged and his aggressive response in one word castigated their entire ethnicity...finally, we're not far from the underground station when, and it was a blur then, never mind now as i recall!...they had abandoned any pretenses to aesthetic concerns and taken to their running for it, and their senses of fraught desperation were palpable, in a most uncoordinated manner, holding onto their hats with one hand, while one of them in addition had dropped a little behind, while he earnestly felt at and scraped along his back with his other hand, while simultaneously he cast a couple of worried and frightened glances over his shoulder...by now other pedestrians on their side of the street and had closed the distance on them, probably compounding their anxiety...it felt something insane and sombrely hilarious watching those austere and dignified figures flee in such a disorganized flurry that is so at odds with their usual association of their presenting in stiffly and rigorously conscientious terms of their conveying and doubtless demanding reciprocated respect...i was momentarily at a distinct loss while witnessing this apparent unfolding reality, that is until i noticed M... a man severally conflicted by menacingly converging and seriously contending demons and his body beginning to quake with fanatical or fantastical laughter as he produced the critical evidence, the key to unravelling the all round unedifying charade, in the shape of a crumpled bag of rather aged and deceptively innocent looking crab apples...i stood their patently stunned while i concernedly nagivated the psychological impositions and worrisome implications of my first introduction to this species and their intense bearer of portable weapons in the form of projectiles...in fact, some essence of possibly my irrecoverably psychic fragility lingers at that spot to this day!...
